In 1907 a tomb designated KV55 was opened in the Valley of the Kings, and the skeleton inside has been called Akhenaten ever since. It does not match the statues. Not the sloping skull, not the flared hips.
The pharaoh you are picturing exists in sandstone and limestone, carved at Karnak in the fourteenth century BCE, and almost nowhere else. Amenhotep IV took the throne looking conventional. The extreme body arrived around regnal year four, then softened again after the court moved to Akhetaten. Diseases do not follow a court calendar. A visual policy does.
Nefertiti was given the same elongated head. So were all six daughters, Meritaten, Meketaten, Ankhesenpaaten, Neferneferuaten Tasherit, Neferneferure and Setepenre. So were courtiers with no claim to royal blood. Nefertiti is not known to have been a blood relative of Akhenaten, which leaves the hereditary reading with nothing to stand on.
That has never stopped anyone. Frohlich syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, Marfan syndrome, aromatase excess, acromegaly, hydrocephalus, temporal-lobe epilepsy, deliberate cranial binding. Every one of them diagnoses a sculpture. The 2010 CT survey found no premature suture fusion and no feminized skeleton in either body, and a 2025 review in Cureus by Turner and Schweiger landed on propaganda rather than pathology.
The son is a different problem, because his body exists. Tutankhamun stood roughly 167 centimetres, died at about nineteen, and returned a cephalic index of 83.9, a head wider than it is long. His left foot carried a collapsed second metatarsal head, diagnosed in JAMA as juvenile aseptic osteonecrosis. The clubfoot reading was challenged by orthopedic surgeon James Gamble on the alignment of the talus and the navicular. More than 130 sticks and staves came out of KV62, which proves fashion long before it proves infirmity.
Then there is the femur fracture with embalming resin inside it, the Plasmodium falciparum DNA that establishes exposure and nothing else, and the murder theory that high-resolution CT ended in 2005. Then the detail almost nobody mentions. Howard Carter's team cut the mummy apart with heated knives in 1925 to free the gold mask. Most of the damage on that body happened after 1922.

This video is about Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and the medical claims attached to their bodies. Amenhotep IV became Akhenaten around regnal year five, founded Akhetaten at Amarna, and introduced the Aten disk at Karnak in the fourteenth century BCE. The elongated skull and flared hips of the Karnak colossi were extended to Nefertiti, to the six daughters including Meritaten, Meketaten and Ankhesenpaaten, and to non-royal courtiers of the late Eighteenth Dynasty, which rules out a hereditary cause. Tomb KV55, opened in 1907, holds a male skeleton with a cephalic index of 81.0 and a stature near 160 centimetres, identified by the 2010 JAMA pedigree as a son of Amenhotep III and Tiye. Tutankhamun, found in KV62 in 1922, died at about nineteen in the ninth or tenth year of his reign, stood roughly 167 centimetres, and had osteonecrosis of the second metatarsal head of the left foot. His inbreeding coefficient of 0.25 follows from full-sibling parentage.
